The Story of Bulika: Faith Built One Brick at a Time

In a small village called Bulika, Uganda, hope was tested in ways few communities could imagine.

When COVID-19 spread across the world, Uganda implemented what became one of the longest national shutdowns anywhere. Transportation stopped almost entirely. Roads grew quiet. Movement between communities became nearly impossible.

For most people, lockdown meant inconvenience.

For the people of Bulika, it meant life or death.

The nearest government hospital sits nearly 14 miles away — a manageable distance with transportation, but an overwhelming journey on foot, especially for expecting mothers preparing to give birth.

With no vehicles available and travel restrictions firmly in place, pregnant women were forced to walk.

Some never made it.

Tragically, mothers and newborn babies lost their lives along the roadside as families desperately tried to reach medical care that was simply too far away. The grief in Bulika ran deep. Mothers mourned mothers. Families mourned children they never had the chance to know.

The community faced a painful reality:

They did not just need better access to healthcare — they needed healthcare in their own village.

A Response Born From Faith

Out of heartbreak came courage.

The women of Bulika made a decision that defied their circumstances. Without funding, without guarantees, and without knowing how it would ever happen, they chose faith over despair.

They began making bricks.

By hand.

Day after day, under the African sun, they molded clay and laid bricks to dry — believing that one day those bricks would become walls… and those walls would become a medical clinic that could save lives.

Today, more than 30,000 handmade bricks stand as a testimony of hope.

They are not just bricks.

They are prayers you can see.

A Vision Begins to Take Shape

This extraordinary act of faith moved the hearts of Dr. Michael Carnahan and Eric Mills, who joined together with Pastor Daniel Kaggwa, a trusted leader within the community, to pursue a shared vision:

To build a permanent medical clinic in Bulika.

Land for the clinic has already begun to take shape. One parcel has been successfully purchased — the first major step toward making healthcare accessible for this community.

But one critical piece remains.

The Missing Piece: “The Coffee Land”

Adjacent to the current property lies a second parcel the team has come to call “the Coffee Land.”

The owner has long cultivated coffee there to support his family, which made selling the land difficult. For nearly two years, efforts to acquire this property stalled as the asking price remained out of reach.

Recently, however, the owner decided to retire and has agreed to sell.

This creates a rare and urgent opportunity.

The Coffee Land completes the property needed for the clinic campus. Without it, the site remains incomplete — like a rectangle missing its top corner — limiting construction plans and the long-term vision for serving the community.

At the same time, land brokers have begun pursuing the property with plans to divide it into smaller parcels for resale. If that happens, the opportunity to build a unified medical campus could be lost permanently.

For now, a government official who recognizes the life-saving impact of this clinic is helping delay competing sales approvals in support of the project.

But that window will not stay open forever.

The Urgent Need

To secure the Coffee Land, a $15,000 down payment is needed immediately toward the total purchase price of $30,000.

This land is more than real estate.

It is the foundation for:

  • Safe deliveries for expecting mothers
  • Emergency medical access within walking distance
  • Preventable deaths becoming flourishing lives
  • A healthier future for generations in Bulika

An Invitation to Be Part of the Story

Years ago, the women of Bulika began building a clinic with nothing but faith and their hands.

Today, the bricks are waiting.

The land is within reach.

And the next chapter of this story depends on people willing to step into it.

Would you help secure the land needed for this life-saving medical clinic?

Your investment and generosity can help transform faith into a finished facility — ensuring that no mother in Bulika must walk miles in desperation again.

Together, we can turn heartbreak into healing.
